Songwriter Spotlight: Laura Veltz - Grammy Nominated Songwriter Expresses Her Weird Through Music

Laura Veltz has earned her Grammy nomination in the category Songwriter of the Year through her lengthy career. She has written for artists such as Demi Lovato, Dan + Shay and Maren Morris.

A Family of Musicians
Laura Veltz spent over 10 years touring and singing in her and her family’s band Cecilia. The band was composed of Laura and her family including her mother Jeannie, her father Kenneth and her siblings Allison and Drew; as well as non-family member Kevin Jacoby. While being one of the lead vocalists in Cecilia, Laura also partook in the songwriting of the band's songwriting and learned multiple instruments. The band split after several EP’s and one album, This, released under the name of The Veltz Family. Not many people can say they spent a great part of their musical journey actively learning through making music with their family but Laura Veltz can.
Branching Into Songwriting
After the band parted ways, Laura Veltz set her sights on a songwriting career so she packed her bags and relocated to Nashville. In 2008 she embarked on a songwriting journey that began in the country music scene. Her very first credits as a songwriter were on country music band Edens Edge self titled EP & Album. The tracks she contributed to were “Slow Motion,” "Skinny Dippin’,” “Who Am I Drinking Tonight?,” “Liar” and “Cherry Pie.” In that same year Veltz received a credit in Jana Kramer’s self-titled album, Jana Kramer, for the track “What I Love about Your Love.” While Veltz has achieved great success in country music she also explores other genres including pop, rock and alternative genres.
Collaborations and Songwriting Credits
Laura Veltz has penned beloved songs such as “Speechless” by Dan + Shay, “The Bones” by Maren Morris and “29” by Demi Lovato. For Demi Lovato’s Holy Fvck album in 2022, Veltz was the primary songwriter with 13 writing credits on the album. She also has credits for artists such as Thomas Rhett, Kelly Clarkson, Lady A, Idina Menzel, Tim McGraw and many more. One of her biggest collaborators to date is Maren Morris, whom she has written with for several of her albums. There is a playlist on Spotify titled “Written By Laura Veltz” that is over 11 hours long - that is the magnitude of her work!
Songwriter Soup & Expressing Her Weird
As her career continues to grow, the amount of knowledge within the music industry grows simultaneously. Laura Veltz has shared her experience through her podcast Songwriter Soup. As one of the hosts of the podcast, she is able to share her journey, likes, dislikes and advice in regards to being a songwriter. She has often said that she loves allowing herself to express her “weird” while creating music. That sense of whimsy while maintaining a grounded enough sense that connects with others is part of what makes her a special songwriter.
