Young Edgar Barrera - His English and Spanish Inspirations

Edgar Barrera has traveled internationally working with the biggest stars in the world. He has written a large number of popular Spanish language songs within the last 10 years in varying genres. But who was he before all the popularized hit songs?

Before he was writing hits with Karol G such as “Mi Ex Tenía Razón” and “Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido”, he was just a kid traveling to and from the United States and Mexico on a daily basis. It was through being raised on both sides of the border that he developed an appreciation for both English and Spanish music. In Mexico he would listen to greats like Juan Gabriel and in Texas he would tap into bands like Green Day. Music runs through his veins as his dad was the lead singer of Cumbia group Mister Chivo.

Finding His Place In The Music Industry

In various interviews Edgar has spoken about how he was accepted into Berklee College of Music and received a scholarship but ultimately the scholarship wasn’t enough to cover the costs so he packed his bags and moved to Miami instead. He started off as an intern in a studio and worked his way to paid collaborations. Edgar attributes his work with a young Maluma to be a big first step into what his career would eventually evolve to. With his rich background in music, he explores different genres and creates genuine music that connects with people.

Barrera Means Barrier…….Barrier Breaking Songwriter

Some of Edgar’s biggest collaborators are leading the Latin music industry today. This is a wave that hasn’t slowed down and with Edgar behind the scenes, it may never stop. Maluma and Christian Nodal both worked with Barrera very early in their careers when they were both still in their teens. To this day they continue to work alongside him for their projects.

Edgar’s blend of Música Tropical, Pop, Dembow helped create Karol G’s Grammy Nominated album Tropicoqueta. His work in Camilo’s album De Adentro Pa Afuera, is a beautiful blend of Pop, Latin, Bachata and Música Mexicana. The genre of Música Regional Mexicana has become more mainstream within the past few years with the likes of Peso Pluma and Bandas collaborating with popular pop and reggaeton artists to create music for the new generation. Many of these collaborations have the penmanship of Edgar Barrera including “un x100to” by Grupo Frontera and Bad Bunny and “Una Noche Contigo” by La Arrolladora Banda El Limon and Juanes.

Aside from his work connecting Latino artists together, Edgar Barrera is no stranger to having pop singles in mainstream radio. He helped pen “Boyfriend” by Ariana Grande and Social House which peaked at number 1 on US Rolling Stone Top 100 chart. Other mainstream artists within the United States that he has written for or with are Madonna, Jason Derulo, Ed Sheeran, Shawn Mendes, Megan Thee Stallion and Khalid.

He Makes Receiving Nominations and Awards Seem Effortless

Edgar Barrera makes winning look effortless. While he has said during interviews that he would rather be behind the scenes in a studio rather than in front of cameras or up on a stage, he is still appreciative of all the nominations he receives for his work. He has accumulated over 72 Latin Grammy nominations and 29 Latin Grammy wins, as well as 3 Grammy nominations and 1 Grammy win. He is notably the only spanish language writer to be nominated for Songwriter of the Year for 3 consecutive years. Edgar’s work continues to be recognized by people in the industry both in Spanish and in English. The way in which he navigates through genres and is able to collaborate with different artists makes him one of the most sought after songwriters and producers.

Incoming In 2026

As Edgar Barrera continues writing and shaping the music industry through his experiences and his ear, we can’t help but root for him and his accomplishments. Sometimes people can spot him on TV playing guitar for the artists he collaborates with and other times hearing a new song that blends multiple genres makes you wonder if he contributed his talents to it. As he continues his journey this year, we are excited to see what new collaborations he is credited for. Edgar has a record label by the suitable name of Borderkid Records in which he shares his knowledge with his artists and teaches them how to stand on their own. Navigating this industry can be treacherous but his stance of educating artists and songwriters rather than just taking a percentage is admirable.
