Carly Rae Jepsen’s second single, “Don’t Leave Me on the Dance Floor,” and accompanying music video have been released. “Don’t Leave Me on the Dance Floor” is a high-energy disco-inspired track that Jepsen wrote after visiting the ABBA Voyage in London, saying, “I’d just been recording in Sweden and then traveled to London to see ABBA Voyage. I came home with a mission of making my own ABBA-esque pop song – something with a perfect pop melody, but with some updated production. I wanted a hook that made you feel like you had to participate and sing along.”
The song’s catchy melody is the perfect vehicle for melancholic lyrics about the fear of abandonment and loneliness in adulthood.
Night Light
On the new single, Jepsen’s lyrics are evocative and honest, as she expresses anxiety about isolation and loneliness. DLMOTDF is an honest plea in the face of an uncertain future, but the track is an incredibly danceable hit, making it a perfect example of finding joy even in the fear. The enticing sounds of synth-inspired late-era disco pull the listener in; the lyrics offer a heart-wrenching account of adulthood in this highly stressful world.
DLMOTDF makes anxiety danceable, building a sense of euphoria through honesty. The music video is an artistic feat, directed by 12-time Tony-nominated Jeremy O. Harris (Slave Play). It follows a newly separated couple as they make their way back to each other through the dance floor.
Alden Ehrenreich and Olivia Washington play the couple; Ehrenreich dances to Jepsen's accompaniment for a small audience, baring his soul and falling to the ground. At the same time, Washington’s silhouette appears out of the darkness. The music video is a tearful ode to the human condition and the desire to create art, even amid turmoil.
“Don’t Leave Me on the Dance Floor” is a profound track, with a stunning music video that perfectly captures the human spirit.
Carly Rae Jepsen will release Night and Day on September 18 and headline the All Things Go Festival on September 27. Her new singles and music videos are available to stream on all platforms.
