Ruel on Tour - Kicking His Feet in Detroit

Article and Photos Contributed by Rachel Catherine

The Kicking My Feet Tour is a celebration of Ruel’s sophomore album, Kicking My Feet, an album that describes through music that feeling of falling in love, when you’re all giddy, giggling and kicking your feet as you start falling hard for someone. A feeling that I know all too well, about a time or two hundred. But it was one fabulous way to end February, a month of love–very fitting for the album and the tour. It was a night of loving and high-energy in Detroit.

Arthur Hill: The Opening Act

Arthur Hill kicked off the night with his London charm and cheeky stage presence. He had that kind of energy that gets you excited for the main act. Arthur had some long-time fans in the crowd along with new listeners that from what I witnessed, really seemed to enjoy his music as they jumped with him, bopped their heads, and clapped along to the beat. has a way of commanding a room that makes even the newest listeners feel like long-time fans. I think his performance brought something special to the show that added onto the excitement for Ruel’s set to follow.

Ruel: Kicking His Feet

Ruel’s entrance for his set was anything but ordinary. It felt original and creative, entering the stage through a front door. I interpreted it as coming into/entering into that new chapter/era/feeling of falling in love. But as soon as he came through that door, you could feel the room fall into that trance, the second he sang his first note. Something about his vibe that just makes him a completely loveable guy with his laid-back/relaxed stage presence.

He never let that energy fall, his strong vocals and dancing his way through the set along with the blend and balance between its touches of stripped-back, acoustic vulnerability, gorgeous piano ballads, and electric performances that showed that music really does come from experiences and feeling, this wasn’t something that is quick, it’s a process.

Ruel didn’t just put on a show, he created a production–an experience where fans and music lovers get to take the night to feel what they want or need to feel through his music. It was a night that definitely left that crowd kicking their feet even after the lights came up. What a night!
