Emma Ogier is Making Friends

Ogier is on her way to becoming one of the biggest indie stars of the moment, with her new single, “Rock Steady/Heavymetal”, a song about what she calls PFB, a post-breakup friendship, with “Rock Steady/Heavymetal” focused on the different types of relationships we experience and the importance of having good friends during life changes. David Baron (The Lumineers, The Felice Brothers) produced the single, but before that, it was Ogier’s demo.

Bringing Eden Joel on as a collaborator was an easy choice, Ogier explains in an interview, saying,

“Our relationship is special and complicated and has always possessed a serious feeling of depth. What started as an undeniable connection and incessant belief in each other, in terms of us both being two young songwriters – vulnerable, on the internet and trying to make real careers of it – turned romantic, yes, but also taught us something about the weight of love – how even when its median shifts, real love is when you still hope for the others success and joy.”

Rock Steady/Heavymetal is a joyous anthem about love, not in the romantic sense, but the euphoria of finding someone who “gets you”. The track is bright and bouncy, with crisp vocals from Ogier and Joel that balance each other, plus a fun group chant that elevates the song and ties the communal themes to the line “I don’t want to leave you behind”. The guitar-forward sound pushes the single and draws on 2010s “stomp-clap” indie, with a catchy rhythm, while the pop-punk-style drums keep it modern and give the song bite. The accompanying music video is fun and fresh, with scenes of Ogier and Joel playing together and separately in different environments that suggest a nod to their influences and eras of their lives.

Ogier on Tour

Emma Ogier has been at the center of conversations surrounding the indie scene, playing with Bright Eyes at three shows celebrating the 21st anniversary of their back-to-back albums I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning and Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. Ogier filled in for Emmylou Harris' vocals on “Land Locked Blues,” giving her the It Girl factor and leading to her tour, including the first weekend of Austin City Limits and support for Hovvdy. Brooklyn Vegan, Americana Highways, and The Spotlight have commented on Ogier’s star power.

Ogier’s new single is available to stream on all platforms, and the music video is now on YouTube.
