Colorblind Strips Away the Noise on Their Haunting Ballad "The Countdown"

Stripped of Colorblind's usual intensity, “The Countdown” creates a cinematic portrait of someone who enters every new relationship expecting it to become another heartbreak.

Ahead of their upcoming debut record, Who Sold You This Truth ++ Was It Yours To Hold, Colorblind has been giving fans a taste of what is to come. Veering away from their usual metalcore riffs and explosive intensity, Colorblind’s newest single “The Countdown” is a stripped-back modern alt-rock ballad.

The Austin-based dreamcore quartet who formed in 2017 is no stranger to emotionally raw lyricism, and "The Countdown" is an immersive and cinematic look at what it’s like to live with hidden heartbreak.

The Countdown Assumes the Ending Before It’s Begun

Opening into a soft ballad with ambient guitar notes, mirroring the vulnerability of the lyrics, "The Countdown" details living life with a broken heart even if it is masked from the surface. “The damage is done. The wounds still open. A severed line stitched up on the surface. I try every time. Don’t want to be hopeless. It’s all on the line. There’s no other option.”

The damage has been done. The wounds haven't healed. The narrator has become convinced that every new connection is already headed toward a painful ending.

“So don’t break my heart this time around. Because new love starts the countdown. Till this all will fall to pieces and you’ll have nothing to say. And I hurt whenever I hear your name. Because new love starts the countdown.”

Unlike the towering guitars and explosive climaxes Colorblind often leans into, "The Countdown" thrives in its restraint. Ambient guitars, spacious production, and an almost weightless arrangement leave nowhere for the emotion to hide.

It’s the kind of song you have in your earbuds on a long road trip as you watch the rain falling down the passenger side window. The Countdown is for when you have a hard time seeing a light at the end of the tunnel and every person after is an apparition of the one who broke you.

“So who’s gonna let me down. Who’s gonna fail me now. Who’s gonna take a chance on me then rip it away.”

Instead of building toward a cathartic release, “The Countdown” sits in its uncertainty. Healing takes time, but for now, the narrator sinks into expecting the worst. No matter how good a person or connection seems, will history repeat itself?

Final Rating: 9/10

At two minutes and 43 seconds, "The Countdown" is a raw and haunting artistic detour for Colorblind that viscerally documents a human experience that many try to shove away.

Bringing listeners into the underbelly of healing, the song depicts someone who carries all of their trauma into their next relationship, assuming every new love is destined to disintegrate. With this new single, Colorblind proves their emotional songwriting is just as powerful in the quieter moments.
